In the south region of Machaira there
was a stone that bore a handprint
that folk said it belonged to Apos-
tle Paul from the time of his journey
through the area in 46 A.D. heading to
Paphos. Many would visit to worship
the stone. The stone was lost due to
road works in the area in recent years.
Fikardou, as well as the surrounding villages, were founded by residents of the occa-
sionally sacked coastal towns, who were forced to flee to the mountains for safety. The
unfavorable living conditions inevitably led to the formation of factions thus adopt-
ing the law of the ‘knife’ as a means of resolving disputes. The area controlled by
this classless society became known as the Machaira (Knife) Mountain and Forest.
In 1760 there was a plague
outbreak that annihilated the
population of the villages in
the surrounding area of Fi-
kardou. Fikardou itself was
not affected. A fact that the
villagers attributed to the
protection of the settlement
by Apostles Peter and Paul.
