Church of Apostles Petrou kai Pavlou
The church is located at the south-west of the settlement of Fikardou. It is dedicated to the Apos-
tles Peter and Paul. The church dates back to the 17th – 18th century. A small, single-nave tem-
ple with a sloping wooden roof in the style of a basilica. The walls are built with local mountain
stones, smaller rocks, ceramic tile fragments and white gravel. The belltower is attached to the
northeastern corner of the temple. The church was renovated in two phases – the first phase was
in 1789 when the temple underwent an expansion in height and possibly in the east side and
the second phase was in 1856 when the eastern and western wall was elevated, and triangular
pediments were added. The church used to have a flat roof and it is during the second phase of
renovations that it acquired its wooden pitched roof. The renovations didn’t change the archi-
tectural type of the temple. The western part of the church courtyard is still used today as the
village cemetery. The church was inaugurated on the 5th of June 1949 by the suffragan bishop
Gennadios of Salamina. When the Departmnent of Antiquities eclared the village as “Ancient
Monument” it also declared the church as an “Ancient Monument Schedule B” and is under
its protection. The church is often filled with joyous occasions like weddings and christenings.
