Village Layout House of Katsinioros House of Achillea Dimitri Petrou kai Pavlou Church Yiannakos Tavern Old School The old Wine Press
On the facade of the house there is a sloping, covered hall supported on a beam
and wooden columns, offering a covered outdoor space for the agricultural
pursuits of the residents. The upper interior accommodated most of the fam-
ily's daily needs. It served as the living room with the table or board for the
daily meal, beds for the whole family and the loom or voufa for weaving. In
the eastern masonry is a plaster souvantza (shelf attached to the wall made of
wood or gypsum) decorated with various representations of angel faces and
bunched vines. The construction of the souvantza demonstrates the use of
molds by the wood carvers of church icons. The souvantza served as a shelf for
storing various household items and utensils. The roof keel, payers and pull-
ers have the same painted and incised decoration as that of the 18th century
church. The two-lobed north window was probably opened at the same time.
In the Katsinioros House, the roof is supported at two different
heights, in the east and in the west. The interior space is divided
into a central nave and a second side nave with a wooden beam
upon pillars with wooden props, the so-called misodotzia. These
wooden props feature morphological elements of the 16th cen-
tury and probably used to be part of a loggia or other form of
housing that the upper floor of the “donor” residence may have
had. Today, the floor is covered with two types of tiles. Some
of them are plasterboard and others are ceramics. The ceramic
plates are characteristic of the mountainous areas, where wood
was abundant to feed the stoves, and are probably the oldest.
